Llamas are members of the camelid family, along with camels, alpacas, vicunas and guanacos. Originally from South America, llamas were originally bred for for their ability to pack and for meat production. Today, they are appreciated for their fiber production, packing/trekking, showing, and as therapy animals. Llamas are often used by ranchers as guard animals for smaller livestock as llamas form protective attachments to their herd and will defend against common predators.
